Swing Dance Shoes: Can You Dance in Bowling Shoes?
Swing and Lindy Hop dancers have worn bowling shoes for years. What makes a good swing dance shoe, why the sole under both shoes matters, and which BOWLIO model suits your style.
Yes, you can dance in bowling shoes – as long as both shoes have a smooth leather sole. Swing and Lindy Hop dancers have known this for years: a bowling shoe is light, flat and laced like a classic dance shoe. Whether it works on the dance floor depends almost entirely on what is under your feet.
Why swing dancers wear bowling shoes
Swing dancing means turning, gliding and changing direction all evening. A sole that grips too hard stops your foot mid-turn and makes every spin harder work. That is why experienced dancers look at the sole first and at the look second.
Bowling shoes are made for exactly this kind of movement: on the approach to the lane, the sole has to slide in a controlled way. Add a flat heel, a low profile and a timeless shape, and you have a shoe that many dancers have quietly adopted. Our own experience matches this: over the years, dancers have written to us again and again that they wear our bowling shoes for dancing.
What makes a good swing dance shoe?
Dance shoe guides agree on a few points. The Los Angeles swing guide puts it in one line: “Leather soles are best. Avoid rubber – it's too hard to spin on.” The swing shoe maker Swivells explains why the sole matters more than you think: leather, suede and similar soles offer the balance between grip and glide that spins and pivots need.
A good swing dance shoe therefore has:
- A smooth sole without rubber under the ball of the foot, so you can turn freely
- A flat, stable heel, so you can rock back and keep your balance
- A secure fit with laces, so the shoe stays on during fast kicks
- A classic look that goes with vintage outfits and with jeans
The catch with most bowling shoes
Not every bowling shoe is a good swing dance shoe. Most performance bowling shoes have a slide sole under one shoe only. The other shoe has a rubber braking sole, so you can push off on the approach. You can read more about this in our guide to slide soles, traction soles and heels.
On the dance floor, that rubber sole is the problem. A swing dancer reviewing a pair of bowling shoes noted that the rubber half of the sole has too much friction on a normal dance floor and can twist the knees. If you want to dance in bowling shoes, check the sole of both shoes before you buy.
BOWLIO: a full-length leather sole under both shoes

Every BOWLIO pair has a full-length leather sole under both shoes – one continuous piece from the toe to the white heel. There is no rubber braking sole under either shoe, so your left and right foot glide the same way. This is the reason dancers write to us.
The upper is genuine leather as well, with a textile lining and a removable insole. The leather gets softer with every wear. Read more on our page about quality and design and in our comparison of leather and synthetic bowling shoes.

Nero, Torino or Verona: which look suits your style?
All three models share the same materials, the same full-length leather sole and the same fit. What you choose is the look.
Nero – all black

The BOWLIO Nero is black from the laces to the upper. It goes with dark trousers, dresses and evening outfits, and it does not draw attention to your feet – a good choice if you want one pair for every occasion.
Torino – black and white two-tone

The BOWLIO Torino is the two-tone model in black and white. Two-tone shoes are a familiar sight on swing dance floors, and the Torino brings that classic contrast to every outfit from wide trousers to a swing dress.
Verona – dark blue and red

The BOWLIO Verona combines very dark blue leather with glossy red leather. It is the most striking of the three and is available as a limited edition.
You can compare all three models side by side in our bowling shoes collection.
Tips before your first dance
- Wear them indoors only. Carry your shoes in a bag and put them on at the venue. Street dirt and moisture roughen a leather sole. Our guide to caring for leather bowling shoes shows how to keep the sole smooth.
- Choose your normal size. BOWLIO shoes are true to size and come in EU 38 to 45 for women and men. The bowling shoe size chart converts EU, US, UK and JP sizes.
- Give the leather a few evenings. New leather feels firmer at first and softens as you dance. More in our article on breaking in new bowling shoes.
- Brush the sole now and then. A soft brush keeps the leather sole clean.

Frequently asked questions
Can you dance in bowling shoes?
Yes, if both shoes have a smooth sole. Many swing and Lindy Hop dancers wear bowling shoes because they are light and flat. Bowling shoes with a rubber braking sole under one shoe are less suitable, because the rubber grips the floor.
Can I wear them outside?
We recommend wearing them indoors only, like any shoe with a leather sole that you want to keep smooth.
Is the sole the same on both shoes?
Yes. Both shoes have the same full-length leather sole, so the pair works for left and right foot alike.
